Finding Inspiration in Creation
We live in a remarkable technological age. Advancements that once belonged only in science fiction have become part of everyday life. Yet one of the most fascinating things about human innovation is how often scientists look to creation for inspiration.
Perhaps that shouldn’t surprise us.
Consider the mantis shrimp. Humans have three color photoreceptors in our eyes, while mantis shrimp have sixteen, allowing them to perceive ultraviolet and infrared light. Their extraordinary vision has inspired developments in autonomous-driving technology. Then there are limpets—unassuming little mollusks whose microscopic tooth fibers are incredibly strong and have inspired stronger manufactured materials. Even the horseshoe crab has contributed to medical advancements because properties in its distinctive blue blood can help detect bacterial contamination.
The more deeply we investigate creation, the more extraordinary its design becomes.
Job 12:7–10 says, “Ask the animals, and they will teach you… or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; and the fish in the sea will inform you… the hand of the LORD has done this” (paraphrased from NKJV).
Creation continually invites us to look beyond what was made toward the One who made it. The intelligence we discover in nature points us toward an intelligence infinitely greater than our own.
So perhaps the next time you stand beside the ocean, watch a bird fly overhead, examine the intricacy of a flower, or simply marvel at your own body’s design, allow yourself to wonder.
Science and discovery can deepen our awe.
Look closely at creation, and let it remind you of the Creator.
His fingerprints are everywhere.
