Encountering the Lord in the Word
We often talk about studying the Bible, and good study absolutely matters. We need context, understanding, and knowledge. But I’ve noticed something interesting: when Scripture teaches us how to approach God’s Word, it frequently uses words like meditate, love, crave, cling, and obey.
That tells me the Bible was never intended to be merely something we study. It is meant to become a place where we encounter God.
Hebrews 4:12 tells us, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword” (ESV). When we become followers of Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives within us to guide, teach, and reveal truth. As we open Scripture, He illuminates the Word so we can discover not merely information about God, but His heart, His desires, His will, and His love.
That means I can approach my Bible differently. Instead of simply asking, What can I learn today? I can ask, Holy Spirit, what do You want to show me? Is there something I need to surrender? Something I need to believe? Is there encouragement You want me to receive?
Jesus warned the Pharisees that they searched the Scriptures believing they contained eternal life, yet refused to come to Him for that life (John 5:39–40). We can know enormous amounts about God without actually knowing God intimately.
So meditate on His Word. Chew on it. Crave it. Cling to it. Let it shape the way you live.
Bible reading doesn’t have to become another spiritual exercise on your checklist. Imagine instead that the Creator of the universe is inviting you to sit down with Him.
Knowing about God is good.
But actually knowing Him is infinitely better.
And that is the beautiful invitation waiting within His Word.
