Marveling Modesty
For many years before I knew Jesus, my outward appearance was my identity.
I fought to perfect what others could see. I chased the weight magazines called beautiful, dressed to impress, painted over my pain with makeup, and used clothing to cover the insecurities screaming inside me. My happiness could rise or fall based on my hair, my makeup, or whether I felt beautiful that day.
What I didn’t understand was that my obsession with outward perfection revealed an inward hunger. My heart and soul were starving for the love and grace of Jesus. When I met Him, He began transforming my identity. It didn’t happen overnight. My mind had been trained in vanity, comparison, and approval, so sanctification has required conviction, repentance, and continually surrendering those old lies.
I still wrestle with them. But now I know who defines me.
Jesus.
First Peter 3:4 encourages us to clothe ourselves with “the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God” (NLT).
We don’t need outward perfection to earn God’s love. We don’t need to impress others or hide our weaknesses behind carefully constructed images.
In fact, Paul discovered something remarkable about weakness. God told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NIV).
What if instead of perfecting our outward appearance, we allowed our lives to display the inward beauty of Christ?
Compassion. Kindness. Truth. Purity. Grace. Those are garments worth wearing.
May our identities become rooted not in what the mirror says, but in what Jesus says.
We are wholly loved. Redeemed. Covered in grace. And beautifully His.
