Holiday Schmoliday!
The holidays are often portrayed as the happiest time of the year. But for many people, they can also magnify disappointment, grief, financial stress, or loneliness.
I learned that firsthand several years ago when I found myself standing in a department store in tears because we couldn’t afford a simple Christmas cookie plate. Looking back, it wasn’t really about the plate. It was about adjusting to a new season of life and wrestling with expectations I didn’t even realize I had.
Then, years later, the Lord asked me to give up television and Christmas movies for an entire year. My first thought was, “Really, Lord? At Christmas?” But He gently reminded me that our relationship with Him doesn’t pause for the holidays.
Neither do life’s challenges.
As I reflected on Scripture, I realized Jesus understands difficult holidays better than anyone. During the Passover meal with His disciples, He wasn’t surrounded by perfect celebrations. He knew betrayal was coming. He knew suffering was only hours away. Yet even in that moment, He remained focused on His Father’s purpose.
Jesus told His disciples, “You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy” (John 16:20, NLT). Those words weren’t just for them—they’re for us.
Whatever season you’re walking through today, remember this: your current struggle is not the end of your story. Just as the cross was followed by the resurrection, God is able to bring beauty from heartbreak and hope from disappointment.
The holidays don’t erase our pain, but they do remind us that Emmanuel—God with us—is present in every season.
Hold on to Him.
Joy is still coming.
