Oaks of Righteousness
Isaiah 61 gives us one of Scripture’s most beautiful pictures of what Jesus came to do. He came to proclaim good news to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, bring freedom to captives, release prisoners from darkness, comfort those who mourn, and exchange ashes for beauty.
But the passage doesn’t stop with healing.
It tells us what those restored people will become: “They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor” (Isaiah 61:3, NIV).
In Luke 4, Jesus declared that this prophecy was fulfilled in Him. He comes to those humbled before God as a healer, binding hearts broken by sin. He comes as a deliverer, freeing us from sin and its devastating effects. He comes as defender and judge, rescuing His people from their enemies. And He comes as Comforter, lifting us from mourning and replacing despair with beauty, praise, and joy.
Yet ultimately, Jesus also comes as a planter.
He plants the seed of the Gospel in the soil of our hearts. Through His healing, deliverance, and comfort, He lovingly cultivates that seed beneath the sunshine of His love and waters it with His Word.
And slowly, growth happens. What began hidden beneath the soil becomes something strong, established, and fruitful. An oak of righteousness. God doesn’t restore us simply so we can feel better or move beyond our pain. He restores us so our lives can display His splendor.
Our healing points to the Healer.
Our freedom points to the Deliverer.
Our joy points to the Comforter.
And our lives become evidence of what Jesus can grow from surrendered soil.
Let Him keep tending your heart.
The seed may be hidden today, but God is growing something beautiful.
