VOICE OF TRUTH FOR TODAY
My Refuge
There I was—broken by disappointment.
Our dreams seemed shattered. A business venture had failed, and circumstances outside our control brought our family back to our hometown. My husband, our children, and I found ourselves living in a tiny RV parked outside my parents’ home.
We were broke and broken. We returned to our little country church and resumed our places on the worship team. But inside, my faith was depleted and my hope was running dangerously low. Every day brought questions. How would we restart our lives? Where would the next paycheck come from? How would our children handle such enormous change?
Still, we kept moving forward.
And somewhere in that season, a familiar Scripture moved from head knowledge to heart knowledge:
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty… He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust” (Psalm 91:1–2, AKJV).
Every Sunday, I stood on that stage and worshiped with whatever little I had left. And God met me there. Our circumstances didn’t immediately change—but I did. My heart changed. My perspective changed. My faith grew. Eventually, our circumstances changed too.
Looking back, I treasure that unexpected year. I developed a precious relationship with my sister and received priceless time with my parents before eventually losing them both.
But the greatest gift was discovering how to trust and worship God not only because of my circumstances but in spite of them.
His presence became my refuge. My fortress. My strength. My haven. And whatever season I face, I can still confidently say: He is my God, and in Him I will trust.
