VOICE OF TRUTH FOR TODAY
Jesus’ Prayer Life
If we want to learn how to pray, there is no better example than Jesus Himself.
During His earthly life, Jesus experienced frustrations, temptations, joys, and sorrows. He carried an enormous assignment from His Father, and throughout it all, He prayed. His prayer life gives us a beautiful pattern we can still follow today.
Jesus believed prayer worked. He taught His followers to ask, seek, and knock, trusting their Heavenly Father to give good gifts (Matthew 7:7–11). Sometimes His prayers were short, like the model we know as the Lord’s Prayer. Other times, He spent the entire night praying.
Jesus intentionally got alone with God, but He also prayed with others. He prayed before meals and gave thanks. He sang hymns as an expression of prayer and worship. Before making important decisions—like choosing the twelve apostles—He spent extended time with His Father.
And Jesus prayed for people.
In John 17, we see Him interceding for His disciples, asking the Father to protect them from the evil one and keep them united. Even today, Scripture assures us that we are not alone in prayer. Romans 8:26 reminds us that when we don’t know what to pray, “the Spirit himself intercedes for us” (NIV).
What an encouragement! Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated, eloquent, or confined to one particular format. Jesus showed us prayer that was private and shared, brief and lengthy, thankful and intercessory.
The invitation is simply to pray.
Jesus, thank You for showing us what a life of prayer looks like. Teach us to seek the Father as You did, to trust that prayer matters, and to faithfully intercede for one another.
May we become women who are ever interceding.
