Prepare the Way
Whenever the President of the United States travels, preparations begin months in advance. Routes are secured, hospitals identified, streets cleared, and countless details coordinated for his arrival.
But more than two thousand years ago, preparations were underway for an arrival infinitely greater—and they had begun thousands of years before.
After four hundred years of silence, God sent an unlikely messenger into the wilderness. John the Baptist had one purpose: prepare people for the arrival of their long-awaited Messiah.
John stood outside the established religious system at the Jordan River, proclaiming a radical message of repentance and forgiveness. Thousands came to hear him, but his message wasn’t simply, “Come see what’s happening.”
It was: Prepare your heart.
Mark records John’s words: “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him” (Mark 1:3, NIV).
John understood that receiving Jesus required more than excitement about His arrival. Hearts needed to change. Minds needed to change. People needed to turn from sin and return to God.
That message still speaks to us. We can become so accustomed to Jesus that we forget the magnitude of who He is. This isn’t the arrival of an earthly ruler whose visit creates excitement for a day. This is the King of Kings whose arrival carries eternal significance.
So perhaps John’s voice still echoes across the centuries: Prepare the way.
Is there anything separating your heart from God? Have jealousy, dishonesty, lust, comparison, or other distractions quietly taken His place? Jesus longs to meet us, forgive us, and transform us.
Turn toward Him. Prepare your heart. The King has come.
