VOICE OF TRUTH FOR TODAY
The Bible—Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
How often do you read your Bible? It’s easy to think of Scripture as an ancient book filled with stories from long ago. But the Bible isn’t merely about yesterday. Its wisdom is relevant today and can guide our tomorrows. In fact, biblical language has become so woven into everyday culture that people often quote Scripture without realizing it.
Ever heard someone mention “the handwriting on the wall”? That expression comes from Daniel 5, when mysterious writing appeared during King Belshazzar’s feast, warning that his reign was ending. What about someone being “as old as Methuselah”? Genesis tells us Methuselah lived 969 years! “Eat, drink, and be merry” has biblical roots too, as does the expression “fall from grace.”
These phrases have endured because God’s Word has influenced generations. But Scripture offers us far more than familiar sayings.
Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword” (NASB).
The Bible reaches into our hearts. It provides wisdom when we’re confused, hope when we’re discouraged, correction when we’ve wandered, and truth when the world leaves us uncertain.
So don’t wait until you’re “as old as Methuselah” or until you see the proverbial handwriting on the wall to open your Bible!
God desires relationship with you now.
Read His Word. Learn His truth. Allow Scripture to shape your choices and guide your steps. And as my eight-year-old granddaughter hilariously summarized “eat, drink, and be merry”:
Keep calm and carry on.
Sometimes the wisdom of a child says it best.
Open your Bible today. God’s Word still speaks—and its truth is for yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
