EMPOWERING LIVES WITH PURPOSE:
God’s word emphasizes the power and responsibility of our tongue, urging us to guard our speech and avoid harmful words. We need to focus on building up rather than tearing down. It gives us many scriptures about controlling our tongue that we must heed.
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit”. (Proverbs 18:21)
This verse emphasizes that words can have a profound impact, either positive or negative, and that our choices in speech will have consequences.
James 3:1-12:
Read this whole chapter, which helps you explore the power and potential of the tongue, both for good and for harm. It also highlights that even a small thing like our tongue can have a great influence, and that it is difficult to control.
“Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech” (Psalm 34:13)
This verse calls for us as believers to actively guard our words and avoid speaking lies or harmful things to others.
I have memorized this verse for over 30 years now! (Ephesians 4:29) Obviously, it was one I needed help with when my potty mouth came out way back when. The great news is that now, God has given me a new tongue and a new voice. This scripture helped me tremendously. There was definitely a reason God had me memorize it!
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen”. (Ephesians 4:29)
This passage encourages believers to speak words that are positive and constructive, rather than those that are harmful or destructive.
“For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech; he must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.” For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” This passage emphasizes the importance of living a life of righteousness and speaking words that are pleasing to God. (1 Peter 3:10-12)
“When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise”. (Proverbs 10:19) Excessive talking can lead to sin, and it is wiser to be thoughtful and deliberate in your speech than empty words.
“Whoever guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from trouble”. This verse highlights the importance of controlling one’s tongue to avoid conflict and problems. ( Proverbs 21:23)
