EMPOWERING LIVES WITH PURPOSE:
God tells us in His Word that the tongue has incredible power. We can use our tongues to bring blessings and life or curses and death. The saying “sticks and stones can break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” Is that a truth or a lie???
Whole books have been written on the power of the tongue. Yes, we must exercise self-restraint with our words, and every time we do, we will be profoundly glad we did.
The Bible contains many verses that discuss the power of the tongue, including its ability to bless and to cause harm:
Psalm 37:30, “The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of justice.”
Proverbs 15:2, “The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.”
Proverbs 21:23, “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue, keeps his soul from troubles.”
Proverbs 13:3, “Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.”
As women who are “leaders,” the call is much higher. We need to talk often with the Lord about what we are to say to others in conflict, in teaching and in any communication we have with another human being. We need to listen to Him first.
We must allow God to search our hearts and point out anything that might offend Him. We need to go to the deepest places of our hearts and allow God’s kindness to bring us to repentance.
Psalm 139 is a good read if you’d like to dig deeper. Give your tongue power to God!
