VOICE OF TRUTH FOR TODAY
Unclean, Unclean!

When COVID first swept through the world, those who contracted the disease were often treated as “unclean”—isolated, separated, and pushed to the margins for the sake of public health. In many ways, this gives us a glimpse into the life of a leper in biblical times.

In Mark 1:40–45, we encounter a man with leprosy who kneels before Jesus, begging to be made clean. Leprosy robbed people of far more than physical health. It stripped them of identity, family, livelihood, worship, and community. Lepers were forced to live on the outskirts of society, crying out “Unclean, unclean!” whenever anyone came near. They were seen as cursed, and only God could heal them.

The leper’s approach to Jesus is bold—and scandalous. By coming close, he risks rejection and further condemnation. Yet his desperation outweighs his fear. Even more shocking is Jesus’ response. Rather than turning away, Jesus turns toward him. Moved with compassion, Jesus reaches out and touches the man. Instead of becoming defiled, Jesus cleanses him.

Scripture tells us, “Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!’” (Mark 1:41, NIV).

This encounter reveals the heart of Jesus. He is not repulsed by our uncleanness. He is moved by compassion. He does not avoid us in our brokenness—He draws near. His touch brings restoration, healing, and belonging.
The question for us is this: Are we willing to approach Jesus with our need? No matter how messy or offensive we think our condition may be, Jesus is willing. His desire is to cleanse, restore, and make us whole.
