VOICE OF TRUTH FOR TODAY
A Beautiful Mess
If you’re anything like me, you rely on GPS when heading somewhere unfamiliar. And just when you think you’re on track, you hear, “Rerouting.” That’s exactly how the past nine years of homeschooling have felt—constant redirection, sometimes year by year, sometimes week by week.
Homeschooling doesn’t come with a perfect roadmap. There is no single “right way” or “wrong way.” With countless books, blogs, and resources available, the options can quickly become overwhelming. Yet as the years have gone by—and as my oldest prepares to enter high school—I’ve learned something important: simple is better.
You don’t need to recreate a full classroom experience at home. Pause. Breathe. Pray. Then look at your family. What rhythms work best for you? Are mornings your sweet spot, or does everyone need time to ease into the day? Do your children thrive curled up with books or through hands-on, active learning? What works beautifully for one family may be completely wrong for another—and that’s the gift of homeschooling.
Some of the best learning doesn’t happen at a desk. It happens through shared experiences—exploring nature centers, libraries, museums, and local classes. It happens while discovering how each child learns best and giving them the freedom to flourish in that space.
Most of all, treasure the time together. Make memories your children will talk about for a lifetime. You only get this one opportunity to raise them up in the way they should go. The days may feel long, but the years are short.
Enjoy the journey—it truly is a beautiful mess.
