VOICE OF TRUTH FOR TODAY
He Heard My Voice
The Bible describes Jesus as our Good Shepherd and His followers as His sheep. Sheep learn their shepherd’s voice so well that they can distinguish it from every competing call.
Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me” (John 10:14, NIV).
I learned the beauty of that truth during one of my darkest seasons.
After a year that seemed determined to take everything from me—including my business, car, relationships, home stability, and nearly my life—I entered the new year alone in a hospital room battling a severe kidney infection.
My body hurt, but my mind was hurting too. Negative voices flooded my thoughts: Nothing will change. You’ll never overcome this. The storms will never end. Finally, I cried out to God.
As sunlight streamed through my hospital window, I sensed my Shepherd calling me back to truth. His Word reminded me that He would never leave or forsake me (Hebrews 13:5). Slowly, despair gave way to peace.
After recovering, I visited my horse, Journey Boy. It had been two weeks since he’d seen me. I called his name from across the pasture, and immediately he stopped eating, lifted his head, and came toward me.
He knew my voice. In that moment, God showed me something beautiful. Journey recognized me because we had spent time together. In the same way, the first step toward recognizing God’s voice is knowing Him.
The more time we spend in His Word and presence, the more familiar His voice becomes amid all the counterfeits competing for our attention.
The Shepherd is still calling. And when we know His voice, we can run toward Him with complete trust.
