Fasting: Waiting for Answers from God?
When many people hear the word fasting, they immediately think of dieting or weight loss. Intermittent fasting. Clean eating. Restrictions and rules. But biblical fasting is not about shrinking your body — it’s about expanding your awareness of God’s presence.
Jesus said, “Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” (John 16:24, NIV). Fasting creates space to ask, listen, and receive — not from the world or our own controlling thoughts, but from God Himself.
Before fully understanding fasting and prayer, I once followed a raw food lifestyle for health reasons. What I didn’t expect was how strongly I would sense the presence of the Holy Spirit. When food distractions were removed, there was suddenly more time — and more clarity — to hear from God. It felt as if Heaven was closer, as if I was being gently taught and guided moment by moment.
Years later, I fasted again — not for physical healing, but for spiritual direction. My life needed answers, and fasting made room for God to speak. The answers I received were not ones I would have chosen on my own, which is how I knew they came from Him. God reminds us, “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13, NIV).
Fasting doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. Some fast food. Others fast media, distractions, or habits that compete for God’s attention. What matters most is the purpose behind the sacrifice. As King David said, fasting humbles the soul (Psalm 69:10).
Jesus reminded us, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, NIV). Fasting is not about deprivation — it’s about alignment.
